Statewide Orthoimagery - Notice of Intent to Award a Contract

The Alaska Statewide Digital Mapping Initiative (SDMI) announces its Intent to Award a Contract for the project “Statewide Imagery Acquisition” to Aero-Metric, Inc. of Anchorage, Alaska. Aero-Metric was the winning proposer in response to the State of Alaska’s RFP 2010-1000-9399, issued March 23, 2010.

The SDMI looks forward to working with Aero-Metric and their contractor team over the next few years and producing a new statewide orthoimage for the entire state of Alaska.

The SDMI also thanks all vendors who participated in the solicitation.

SDMI Statewide Orthoimagery RFP Released

The State of Alaska Department of Natural Resources has issued an RFP for statewide orthoimagery acquisition for Alaska on behalf of the Statewide Digital Mapping Initiative.

Important Notice: If you received the solicitation from the State of Alaska’s “Online Public Notice” web site, you must register by phone, fax, or mail with the procurement officer listed below to receive subsequent amendments. Failure to contact the procurement officer may result in the rejection of your offer. Include the RFP Number in your contact.

Important dates to note include:

Proposals must be received no later than 4:00 P.M., Alaska time on April 16, 2010.
There is a pre-proposal conference scheduled for Thursday, April 1, 2010.

New Browse.alaskamapped.org

We have rolled out a the new browse.alaskamapped.org website. This is a complete rewrite of the browse application from the ground up. This new browse application has been hiding in the wings as a beta product for over a year and many of the AlaskaMapped users have had a chance to bang on it. The major new features are:

Cart System
- You can add multiple datasets to your cart before starting to download them.
Authentication system
- You can now sign-up for an account on AlaskaMapped. This will allow us to provide access to restricted datasets.
More datasets available for download
- The old system limited how many datasets we could offer for download. The new browse site does not have this restriction, allowing us to offer you such goodies as the USGS Topographic Charts.

Strategic Plan Released

The Alaska Statewide Digital Mapping Initiative is pleased to announce the release of a Strategic Plan outlining the need, rationale, and benefits of improved base mapping of Alaska.

From the Executive Summary: “An underlying digital base map of Alaska is essential to support informed public policy and decision making on a broad scale. It is also critical to deliver competent disaster recovery and emergency services to the citizens of Alaska as well as a variety of other value added products, which would benefit both public and private users.”

SDMI WMS in Google Earth

You can now add the BDL and DRG (USGS Topographic Maps) WMS layers to Google Earth. The WMS is being made available via a KML files. You can open KML files in both Google Earth and Google Maps.

If you have any issues using the KML files, feel free to use the forum announcement as a place to give feedback.

SDMI Survey

Survey is closed - Results from user survey is now available.

The SDMI survey has been published and is available to all to take. This survey is directed to those who utilize digital imagery and/or elevation data in their operations, and includes technicians and managers alike. If you have taken a prior draft version of this survey before, please take the time to complete this particular survey. We will be conducting follow-up on this survey. Your efforts will lead to better data upon which to base important decisions regarding SDMI. The survey is available at the following link:

This survey is very important to the SDMI project, as it will enable us to collect the data upon which to assess the need for digital imagery and elevation data, including resolving questions as to what resolution of data is most suitable for SDMI.

SDMI Briefing Paper and AKSMC booth

Summary:

Government, military, and commercial operations need accurate digital base maps to meet their missions. Alaska’s Statewide Digital Mapping Initiative (SDMI) is an interagency program to produce high-resolution, digital base maps of the entire state. Existing topographic maps of Alaska are more than 40 years old, and inaccuracies of up to a quarter-mile exist in places. Alaska is the only state in the nation without current digital imagery and elevation maps at nationally accepted standards.

Also, SDMI will have a booth at the 42nd annual Alaska Surveying & Mapping conference this week from Tuesday afternoon until Thursday evening. There will also be a Friday morning technical session about SDMI.
