Survey is closed - Results from user survey is now available.

The SDMI survey has been published and is available to all to take. This survey is directed to those who utilize digital imagery and/or elevation data in their operations, and includes technicians and managers alike. If you have taken a prior draft version of this survey before, please take the time to complete this particular survey. We will be conducting follow-up on this survey. Your efforts will lead to better data upon which to base important decisions regarding SDMI. The survey is available at the following link:

This survey is very important to the SDMI project, as it will enable us to collect the data upon which to assess the need for digital imagery and elevation data, including resolving questions as to what resolution of data is most suitable for SDMI.

Summary:

Government, military, and commercial operations need accurate digital base maps to meet their missions. Alaska’s Statewide Digital Mapping Initiative (SDMI) is an interagency program to produce high-resolution, digital base maps of the entire state. Existing topographic maps of Alaska are more than 40 years old, and inaccuracies of up to a quarter-mile exist in places. Alaska is the only state in the nation without current digital imagery and elevation maps at nationally accepted standards.

Also, SDMI will have a booth at the 42nd annual Alaska Surveying & Mapping conference this week from Tuesday afternoon until Thursday evening. There will also be a Friday morning technical session about SDMI.

The Alaska Statewide Digital Mapping Initiative’s primary goal is acquire new and better maps for Alaska and make existing map products more easily available. At this site, you can:

View existing maps, satellite images, air photos, and elevation data
Download maps or images to print or use in your mapping software
View the current inventory of imagery and elevation data for Alaska

The Alaska Statewide Digital Mapping Initiative (SDMI) is strongly committed to making data freely and easily available through open standards. In addition to the online viewers and download options available at this site, the SDMI publishes data through open standards web services. SDMI web services tutorials are available.

The Alaska Statewide Digital Mapping Initiative seeks to make ongoing improvements to the maps for our State. Alaska is the only State in the Nation lacking current, accurate, high-resolution maps. The fact Alaska does not have a state-wide digital map is a deterrent to economic growth and a risk to public safety. Resource management requires a strong mapping foundation; emergency preparedness and readiness for disaster recovery depends upon accurate location information.
